Gwinnett Tiny House Community

Pioneering Partnership Between Gwinnett Housing Corporation and MicroLife Institute to Bring Gwinnett’s First “Tiny Home” Community to Life

Gwinnett Housing Corporation (GHC) announced a strategic collaboration with The MicroLife Institute, marking a significant step in meeting the rising demand for “Missing Middle” housing solutions in Gwinnett County. This housing category includes options such as townhomes, duplexes, triplexes, and cottages, catering to the space between single-family homes and mid-rise apartments.

The partnership was solidified following GHC’s receipt of a development grant from Gwinnett County, dedicated to the creation of Gwinnett’s inaugural tiny home or “cottage court” community. The realization of this innovative project is made possible by the recent updates to Gwinnett County’s development ordinances, implemented in October and effective as of January 1, 2024, with the aim of diversifying housing options for residents.

“The recent overhaul of ordinances is a game-changer, empowering small, nonprofit developers like GHC and the MicroLife Institute to address the pressing need for affordable housing in Gwinnett. First-time homebuyers face substantial challenges in today’s market, and we aim to provide a solution by offering affordably priced homes, allowing more families to achieve their dreams of homeownership,” explained Lejla Prljaca, CEO of Gwinnett Housing Corporation.

Expressing excitement about the collaboration, Will Johnston, Executive Director of the MicroLife Institute, stated, “We are thrilled to announce a groundbreaking partnership with the Gwinnett Housing Corporation. This marks a significant stride in our relentless pursuit of enhancing community connectivity. Joining forces with Lejla and her dedicated team amplifies our shared mission and vision, propelling us towards expanding housing options across the entire metro area. Through collaboration and extending our efforts to Gwinnett County and neighboring counties, we aim to create thriving communities that strengthen the bonds among us.”

The project will introduce cottage-style homes up to 750 sq ft, priced to be accessible to families earning up to 80% of the Area Median Income. The specific location is yet to be determined. This initiative represents a crucial step toward fostering inclusive and affordable housing solutions in Gwinnett County.
